Flashback Friday: Texan Style

During the winter of 2022, CSBK will celebrate Suzuki’s 2021 National Manufacturer’s Title with a look back at the history of Suzuki’s production-based racers.  Each Friday will offer a glimpse into the impressive legacy of Suzuki’s success.

The first-gen Suzuki GSX-R750 didn’t debut in the USA until 1986, a year after most of the rest of the world, including Canada, got the alloy-framed, oil-cooled race replica.  While Yoshimura only ran a partial season with the new design in AMA Pro action in 1986, by 1987 the “Gixxer” was a successful works, as well as privateer, entry in the US. Here rising star Kevin Schwantz of Texas styles to a dominant victory on the factory Yosh entry at the long-gone Bryar Motorsport Park (Loudon) in June, 1987.  Canadian Suzuki mounted privateers finished fifth (Gary Goodfellow) and ninth (Vancouver’s Tom Walther).
