Flashback Friday: George, We Have A Problem

During the winter of 2022, CSBK will celebrate Suzuki’s 2021 National Manufacturer’s Title with a look back at the history of Suzuki’s production-based racers.  Each Friday will offer a glimpse into the impressive legacy of Suzuki’s success.

At the Molson Superbike Challenge National at Shannonville Motorsport Park in 1988, Friday practice didn’t go well for Suzuki’s established top gun Michel Mercier on his Pro Production class (note the stock pipes and treaded tires) GSX-R750.  Mercier was involved in a collision coming off the back straight with another Suzuki, wrecking the points-leading production entry.  Tuner Mike Crompton took a moment to pose with the debris before returning to work on the factory Superbike.  Team manager George Morin was despatched to Toronto with Crompton’s pick up truck to get a new GSX-R750, and by evening they were piecing together their support class entry under lights in the paddock.
