Defending Superbike champion Alex Dumas found his groove quickly ahead of the round three doubleheader at Atlantic Motorsport Park this weekend, leading Saturday’s morning warm-up session ahead of rival Ben Young.
Young led the early portion of the session as both riders dipped down into the mid-1:08 lap times quickly, but Dumas managed to find a slightly better time late in the morning as he posted a 1:08.451 aboard his Liqui Moly/Fast School Suzuki.
That time was just 0.080 seconds clear of Young in second, a common them of the weekend thus far as both riders have been painstakingly close to each other in the early going – including a first-ever tie for pole position on Friday.
Young was awarded the top grid slot for this weekend’s races after the Van Dolder’s Home Team BMW rider won the coin toss to decide track positioning on Saturday morning, with Dumas taking the outside of row one opposite Young and Trevor Daley.
Daley will have some work to do prior to race one this afternoon, after a crash early in the session limited him to just three flying laps. The OneSpeed/Pro Cycle Suzuki rider was thankfully uninjured, as he looks to upset Dumas and Young to score his first career Superbike victory this afternoon.
In Daley’s place as the third-fastest this morning was instead Michael Leon, who nearly got to within a second of Dumas as he looks to capture his first podium of the season for the Royal Distributing BMW team.
Daley still managed to go fourth-fastest despite the incident, marginally quicker than Sebastien Tremblay in fifth, who appeared to be sorting out some issues on his Turcotte Performance Kawasaki ahead of this afternoon’s race.
The fifth race of the feature campaign and first of the doubleheader weekend is scheduled to get underway just after 3 pm AT (2 pm ET), with a full slate of racing both before and after that in the five national support classes.
