Round 1 Report: Trevor Daley

With many hours spent over the latter half of the off season in preparation for the opening round of the Mopar CSBK championship at Shannonille Motorsport Park last weekend, it was with much excitement that Trevor climbed aboard his new Yamaha Canada FZR-R1M for the first time at Thursday’s Pro6Cycle track day.

“I felt very comfortable immediately on the bike and was very impressed with the responsiveness of the chassis and how much feedback the bike gave me,” Trevor said.  “Dave Weaver, my tuner and I spent the test day making changes and getting me acclimatized with all the electronic functions and rider aids that the Yamaha has to offer. With the R1 being the first ‘current generation’ bike I have been on, I was extremely impressed with everything and mildly amused with the multiple comments from people at the track that I am looking like less of a “Wild Man” this year. “

Friday’s official CSBK practice sessions were successful, getting used to the new bike and with Dave dialling in the Ohlins suspension and Graves YEC electronics. With some fresh Dunlop tires installed on a set of fresh Yamaha wheels generously donated to Trevor by friend Frank DaSilva for the weekend, Trevor entered Saturday’s Dalton Timmis Insurance Pro Superbike Qualifying sitting fourth place after qualifying session 1.

With the level of competition for the 2016 season becoming greatly elevated over the offseason, Trevor was very happy to have qualified and to be starting the race fifth after only missing the front row by under 0.001 of a second to friend and fellow rider Ben Young in the Top 10 Qualifiers Shootout session. Sunday morning’s practice had even more gains made as Trevor closed within half a second of the session’s fastest time.

As the lights went off and the field came around for the completion of the opening lap for Sunday’s main event, Trevor fell in behind fellow Yamaha rider Kevin Lacombe. After clearing Kevin on lap 4, Trevor ran the pace of the lead group but after much effort was unable to close the gap.

“I was watching the lead group out in front of me and was hoping they would start dicing, enabling me to close up and have a late race charge forward.  Matt’s opening race pace was really strong and I could see the possibility of that happening fading as everyone had their head down trying to catch him,” Trevor said.

With the heat and high track temps creating some slippery areas where some of the tracks pavement was breaking up, Trevor chose to ride conservative entering the final third of the race. “Unfortunately I caught myself out between being cautious in some sectors and aggressive in others and made a mistake, getting in too hot to the brake zone at the end of the back straight.” After rejoining the track in 8th place, Trevor pushed in the closing laps and moved back up to 7th at the checkered flag.

Trevor was content taking valuable championship points from the weekend and has a clear focus towards specific improvement for a better result from the next event, June 23-26th.

Trevor and OneSpeed Racing would like to thank everyone who made race one a success and possible and can’t wait to see all the fans at round 2 in June.
