Rounds 3 & 4 Report: Stacey Nesbitt

SHUBENACADIE, N.S.  – July 15-17 saw the latest rounds of Mopar Canadian Superbike Championship at Atlantic Motorsport Park. After the disappointment of mechanical issues at St-Eustache it was thanks to S.C. Motosport and Pat Milligan to have a motor ready for the East Coast races. Morning practice was eventful when the steering damper bracket broke. Fortunately Stacey was able to hang on to a couple big tank slappers that were violent enough to sheer off the steering stop bolts! On the plus side the motor was working fine. Stacey was not happy with the font end feel some so changes were made for qualifying on Friday afternoon.

In the Liqui Moly Pro Sport Bike class Stacey qualified her Statoni Racing/BLK RDR by Motovan 600 in seventh place and twelfth in Mopar Pro Superbike. Her lap times were down on the previous year so more work needed to be done.  It was great to have Jon Cornwell back and he made suspension improvements all weekend with changes on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday was very hot and humid for both races. First up was the Liqui Moly Pro Sport Bike. As the lights changed Stacey delayed her start to avoid a jump start penalty. She retained her seventh position and battled hard for a few laps before moving up to sixth. By that time  the gap to fifth was too large to close down but she set a new personal best lap time. A good start in the Mopar Superbike race saw Stacey move up a couple of positions into turn one. The Superbikes soon showed their pace at the end of the roller coaster back straight. At the finish Stacey crossed the line in eleventh and the second 600 home. It was tough physically in the heat after 40 laps of racing but Stacey was happy with the progress from Friday.

Sunday was cooler with the forecast calling for rain in the afternoon. Again first up was the Liqui Moly Pro Sport Bike race. A better start saw her battle hard for fifth eventually crossing the line to finish fourth. Another new personal best lap time by a further half a second and not far from the podium.

For the Mopar Superbike race there were rain drops at the start but the track remained dry throughout. It turned into a good battle between four or five riders. Stacey moved up to eleventh challenging for tenth and back down to thirteenth again. She finished twelfth.

“Overall I am happy with how the weekend went. The bike felt good with the suspension improvements ‘Corndog’ (Jon Cornwell) made throughout the weekend and I got more confident each day. I was able to improve my lap time from last year on the same bike. It is a relief to start to show some progress again after all the problems in the past year. The goal is to continue this progression at the next round.”

Thanks to the ARL for their hard work with track preparation, the corner workers, medical staff, photographers, CSBK and the fans/supporters for coming out to cheer on the racers.
