Round 1 Report: Burns Racing

First off I have to give a huge and I mean huge thank you to my dad, my mom, Tyler Cameron, Shanelle Sampson, and of course my girlfriend Desarae. If it weren't for them this weekend could've easily been a bust. The typical race weekend family of the Walkers, the Hoods, Adolfo, Steve E, Joey B, and JP (Sam) also need a thanks for the great company and good Saturday Night eats.

So to kick things off with Mopar CSBK Canadian Superbike Championship Thursday started out bright and early as I had to be at the track to pick up the bike I was going to ride... yeah that's right I bought the bike I rode this weekend the day before I had to step up for the nationals. Thank you to Elie for working with me and delivering the bike so early in the morning. Thursday started off nice but ended soggy as the swap over began from the blown up bike to get the new bike through tech Friday morning and ready to be competitive for the nationals. Big thanks to my dad for completing the work and an even bigger thank you to the Nesbitt's for offering us a dry spot to complete the work into the late hours of the night.

Friday there was still some buttoning up to be done and the bike finally rolled through tech with minutes to spare before my first session. The bike passed tech but I didn't get a chance to go to a new set of tires so I was rolling out for the Shoei Amateur Sport Bike class on the cold GPA pros that were on the bike from purchase. To say those tires didn't stick was an understatement. After tip toeing my way through the first session I made sure the bike was set up to ride and everything started to feel good except for one thing, the bike was slow. First thing I did after the session was head straight to the dyno to see what I was working with. Speculating about 100-105 HP. Boy was I in for a surprise when the first pull registered a whopping 90HP and then it dropped off hitting an ultimate low of 86HP... I was in for a tough weekend. Second session went smoothly and I was working on my corner speed as it was safe to say I was going to need an abundance of it to be competitive.

Saturday was another day of working on corner speed and in qualifying I put a fresh set of Pro 6 Cycle Inc. Dunlop Tires on for the SHOEI Helmets Amateur Sport Bike class and managed to pull a 1:10.6 out on my 15th lap of the session which put me 6th overall in Q starting me dead center in the second row. I was beyond excited to say the least as the 1:10 was the fastest I'd ever throw down on Shannonville Long track. Making a bit of contact on my fastest lap with another rider was interesting to say the least.

Sunday morning was race day and after getting a good nights sleep at the CSBK hotel of choice Best Western Belleville I was refreshed and ready to rock. A fresh Dunlop Rear tire was in order and I was nervous and ready to go all in one set of emotions.  I got what you could describe as the absolute worst start possible to absolutely ruin my good qualifying position. I can't lie I had a blast out there making passes and working on my corner speed throughout the weekend. I managed to set a best time of 1:10.5 which to me is rather impressive with the HP numbers I was laying down. I finished 8th which wasn't ideal but it was successful for a mostly stock ish bike minus suspension.

All in all I had a great weekend and besides having to buy the new motorcycle after an engine failure last weekend this really showed me what racing is all about. Sure I finished 8th at my home track and a podium would have been nice but even pushing that hard and doing what I did with what I had was more than enough to have me over the top ecstatic grinning ear to ear when I got that checkered flag.

I'm beyond excited to take what I learned this weekend to Grand Bend Motorplex in 2 weeks to throw down with the best of them and improve my overall standings in the Mopar Canadian Superbike Championships for Round 2.
