In my racing career I've never flown east to go to a race, I was excited to head to Round 4 of the 2017 Mopar CSBK Canadian Superbike Championship series at the famed Atlantic Motorsport Park in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia. Our new Suzuki GSX-R1000 was getting better and better each round as we were getting more time on the bike and building some data to move forward as the series was closing on the final four rounds. We've been moving ahead in the standings as the season has progressed and our goal was to string two more top tens together in NS and carry that momentum into CTMP to close the season.
The weather on Thursday was rainy all day. I rode as many laps as I could to try to get a better feel on the technical track. Because the weekend was a double header qualifying would be held on Saturday afternoon so it was going to be tough to get up to speed with only one dry session under my belt Friday morning. We dropped more than second in qualifying Friday afternoon and ended up in 14th spot.
SATURDAY RACE 1 Once again I jumped up a few positions on the first lap to about 8th place. Unfortunately just a couple laps into the race I started to develop some brake fading that would get worse as the race went on and did the best I could to maintain decent pace and ended up finishing in the 14th spot.
SUNDAY RACE 2 We got the brakes figured out for Race 2 and we were looking forward to a better result in the second race. I launched the start again and I was trying to hang tough inside the top 10 but eventually slipped to the 12th spot.
Overall I wish the weekend would have gone a little better but we knew it was going to be tough heading to "Shubie" for the first time. I'm currently sitting only 4 points back in the battle for the Brooklin Cycle Rookie of the year award and am excited for the last two rounds at CTMP - August 19 and 20. I've had a few laps around the track and have had some success last year in Amateur Superbike so hopefully we can end the season on a high note as the 2017 rookie of the year! We will have a hospitality tent set up for all of our fans, friends and family to enjoy their weekend, I look forward to seeing you guys there!
