A two-time pro champion will be returning to the Bridgestone CSBK paddock in round five, as Tomas Casas has confirmed his upcoming appearances at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and the season finale in Shannonville.
Casas will do double-duty at CTMP, returning not just to the feature GP Bikes Pro Superbike grid but also to the Economy Lube Pro Sport Bike class, where he raced from 2015 through 2019.
His return to Superbike will come with the backing of Yamaha Motor Canada, as he pilots a 2022 “next-gen” YZF-R1 for the first time in his career. Yamaha Canada’s support has been crucial to Casas’ career, a relationship that has spanned nine of his ten years aboard Yamaha machinery, and he is thrilled to continue that partnership at his home track in CTMP.
Casas last contested the 2023 season in Superbike, scoring a podium in race one and fighting for a career-best third in the championship before an injury at the final round dropped him to seventh in the final order.
Tomas made the difficult decision to sit out the first four rounds of the 2024 campaign, but will return to CSBK with the valued support of both Yamaha Motor Canada and Taso’s Restaurant and Pizzeria.
“I’m so excited to be back on the grid, and I can’t thank Yamaha Canada and Taso’s enough for their support through this whole process,” Casas said. “It hasn’t been easy to be on the sidelines, but I’m looking forward to a good weekend and putting on a show for the fans at ‘Mosport.”
As for his comeback in Sport Bike, the 2017 and 2018 champion will join the Colron Excavating Yamaha team aboard Brad Macrae’s YZF-R6, as the former race winner remains sidelined with hand injuries suffered at the Daytona 200.
Casas had hoped to team up with Macrae in the middleweight class at CTMP, but a second round of surgery has ruled him out for round five. As a result, Macrae has generously offered his primary, “A” bike to Casas for his return to the Sport Bike ranks.
“It’s unfortunate that Brad won’t be able to ride with us at CTMP, but I’m extremely thankful for him allowing me to ride one of his R6’s next weekend,” Tomas said. “It will be fun to be back in Sport Bike and racing two classes again, it looks like it’s going to be a really exciting grid and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”
It will be his first official racing in the category since 2019, where Casas’ bid for a third consecutive championship fell short by only 33 points (15 points under the current format).
The 25-year-old ranks eighth all-time with ten Sport Bike victories and 25 podiums, and still owns the record as the youngest champion in class history.
It remains unclear whether Casas will continue in Sport Bike at the season finale in Shannonville, though he is pleased to confirm that he will contest the Superbike class for each of the final two rounds.
Tomas would like to thank all those who have supported him throughout 2024, including Yamaha Motor Canada, Taso’s Restaurant and Pizzeria, GBRacing, Motul, Hindle Exhaust, Bickle Racing, Flexiglass, DP Brakes, Brooklin Cycle Racing, Human 2.0, Forsaken Motorsports, Peterborough Cycle Salvage, Trackdayhub, Laps4MD, and all his friends and family who have been with him along the way.
He additionally would like to thank Brad Macrae Racing and those who have helped with the R6 program, including Colron Excavating, Cartier Racing, Unique Cycle, and Crown Collision.
