The good, the very good, and the downright ugly—Trevor Daley puts on a show at Canadian Superbike’s most anticipated round
In Trevor’s only other Bridgestone Canadian Superbike Championship appearance this season, back in June at Grand Bend Motorplex, he won both the Economy Lube Pro Sport Bike and GP Bikes Pro Superbike races on a Sunday to remember. Armed with solid data and with the guidance of tuner Jon Cornwell and Australian electronics engineer Jake Skate, Trevor believed he’d taken a step to be even more competitive at his next scheduled appearance, this past weekend’s races at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
Trevor’s weekend at CTMP started out well, with pole position (his first!) in Sport Bike and front row start in Superbike. But in Saturday’s Sport Bike race, a fistful of throttle meant Trevor and his GSX-R750 parted ways resulting in a DNF. Later that afternoon, with a left hand that looked like a balloon about to burst, Trevor gutted out the Superbike race to a ninth-place finish. Alas, it appeared the magic that happened back in Grand Bend was not going to be repeated—or so it seemed.
On Sunday morning Trevor squeezed his swollen left paw into a glove, and, proving he’s at his best when the weather is at its worst, won a wet Pro Sport race. But the best was yet to come. Lining up for the Superbike race on a wet but drying track against the best riders in the country, Trevor, with his hand-and-a- half, launched hard off the line and into the lead. Despite being stalked by defending series champ Ben Young in the late going, Trevor brought his GSX- R1000 home for the win on a set of Bridgestone rain tires ground down to such a degree that they resembled slicks.
Winning is special. For any rider. At any level. But winning a pro superbike race at Mosport, as CTMP was long known, is a feat reserved for a rare few. Trevor would like to share this victory with those who have supported him in racing and in life. And despite post-event X-rays that showed a pair of broken bones in his hand (he’s on a first-name basis with the X-ray team at his local hospital) he’ll be at CSBK’s season finale at Shannonville August 30th to September 1st. We love to see you there.
