Round 5 of the Bridgestone Canadian Superbike Championship and the Economy Lube Pro Sport Bike Championship took us to one of our all-time favourite tracks, old Mosport, now Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
A little bit of grade four math told us that there was a possibility of bagging the Pro Sport Bike Championship if you could stay ahead of our rivals. Which would be a great way to thank Suzuki Canada for the support and believing in Sebastien.
But championship management always puts extra pressure on the rider having to decide to ride all out or ride it safe. Fortunately for the crowd, anyone who is not pushing hard all weekend won't get to climb on the podium with the level of talent and intensity on display this year. So the plan was simple, we like simple plans, qualify well and fight for a place on the podium.
Friday qualifying was in the wet and was cut short due to crashes before Sebastien had time to get the best out of our Suzuki GSX-R750. We had officially qualified 11th, so much for the simple plan idea.
During Saturday dry practice Sebastien had great pace and he showed the team that he didn't think for one second that a podium wasn't possible. With high spirits the team looked in amazement as he navigated through traffic to bring the fight to the leading duo. He came out on top of this fight against tough competition. Another 1st place, the fourth of the season, gave us some room to breathe for the upcoming Sunday battle.
But then, Sunday was a mess! With rain on and off, we waited until the last possible second to see what Sebastien wanted to race on: Bridgestone Slicks or Bridgestone Rain. The track was wet but drying so Sebastien decided to go for Slicks and start from pit lane. The lap times led us to believe that was the good decision as he was coming from the back turning times much faster than the racers ahead but all hell broke loose when a wall of rain fell on the track. The race was called while in 11th place... Our worst finish in a long time. But before I could get my Casio scientific out of my pocket, a CSBK official came to tell us the good news. Sebastien had secured the Championship! His second Pro Sport Bike Championship, an achievement we are all very proud of!
Congratulations Sebastien.
Now let's head over to Shannonville where we, as Cam Bickle so elegantly put it, will race for pride!
Special thanks to:
Suzuki Canada, Bridgestone, CSBK, Turcotte Performance, Bickle Racing, Hindle, Ohlins, ST Motosport, Euromoto
